Therapy is more of an experiential process than a linear one. It’s important that you experience it for yourself. See how it feels, and then decide. It may take a few sessions before you feel comfortable, or you may find yourself searching for a better fit, and that’s okay too. What matters most is that you pay attention to how you feel along the way . After all, this is your journey.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does psychotherapy work?
Psychotherapy was originally called “the talking cure.” The act of putting one’s deepest experiences into words with an attuned, responsive, sensitive, real other can have a transformative effect. Sharing our pain builds an essential human connection by bringing experiences once carried alone in fear into a shared relational space. Understanding our patterns through this relating, talking, listening can finally help us change them so they no longer have to define us.
What happens? What do i do? What do you do?
You talk as openly and honestly as you can — at your own pace, in your own words. My role is to listen intently and deeply, to all that you are saying, and to all that remains unsaid. I ask questions to clarify, to gently challenge, and to help unearth the patterns that no longer serve you, so that together, we can begin changing them.
Is there any homework?
It depends on the kind of work we are doing, and on you. If the approach calls for it — as with CBT — or if we both feel that setting a goal to work on between sessions could be helpful, we’ll decide on it together, collaboratively.
What about medication?
As a therapist, I am not qualified to prescribe medication. If at any point we feel this kind of support could be helpful, I will refer you to the appropriate professional.
What is the framework? What about cancelations?
Our sessions are usually 50 minutes long, once a week. Together, we find a time that works well for both of us, and try to hold that same slot consistently — creating a steady rhythm to the work. If you need to cancel, we ask that this be communicated at least 24 hours in advance, except in the case of an emergency; otherwise, the session will be charged.
